There are many companies who profess to being experienced and
specialist in the field of PPI compensation. There are also still a
huge number of people receiving unsolicited text messages and
emails from companies who tell people they know how much they are
entitled to.
If you are one of these customers, or you are unsure about
claiming compensation for payment protection insurance (PPI), then
you can call Payment Protection Scotland in complete confidence,
knowing we are on your side… and no one else's!
How does a company know how much I am entitled to?
They don't. The texts they send you are fishing for your
business, hoping that by telling you they know exactly how much PPI
compensation you are entitled to, you will call and they can reel
you reel you in that way.
No one knows how much compensation you are entitled to until any
PPI that you have on your accounts has been assessed, and the
calculation applied.
Likewise, no company can find out for you on your behalf without
you giving express permission for this to happen, in the form of
written authorisation. Any firm who does this without your consent
is effectively stealing your data, a criminal offence under the
Data Protection Act.
They say they can get me compensation, without checking for
PPI. They say everyone has been affected.
It is true to say that there are huge numbers of customers who
were duped in buying and paying for an insurance policy that was
little use to them. The scale of the mis-selling of PPI is huge; in
fact, the size of the issue caught everybody off guard, from the
banks themselves through the financial industry regulators.
But, this does not mean that you are automatically entitled to
PPI compensation. You still need to show you had the policy in the
first place and that it was mis-sold to you. Many less reputable
and experienced companies did, in the early days of PPI
compensation, submit a large number of ineligible claims.
Companies write to me, telling me that I am owed PPI
compensation for a loan or other products I had with them. I don't
think I had PPI, as I would never had agreed to it…
Again, some companies are fishing for PPI compensation work BUT,
what you must remember is that some customers were 'sold' PPI
without them actually knowing.
In other words, PPPI was an addition to your account after you
signed on the dotted line for your loan, credit card etc. so it
might be that you have no idea you were mis-sold the product in the
first place.
